Image copyrights
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you posted an Apocalypse comic book shot at Apocalypse (comics) . The signature of the artist includes a copyright symbol (I think), so I'm listing it as a possible copyright violation. If you have any more info on this particular picture, please post it on my talk page or on the image talk page. If not, we need to delete the image. Thanks. Bratsche 00:04, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I just sent Dave Devries (the artist) an e-mail (his is Cakemix5@aol.com) saying
- Hello.
- There is a site called Wikipedia, which is a encyclopedia-type site where you can contribute to an add entries on different subjects, including fictional characters.
- I was wondering if you'd be ok if one of your images was used in one of the entries, if proper credit was given.
- Wikipedia is a nonprofit site, btw.

More image copyright problems
[edit]Hi DrBat. I noticed that you added some images to the Tom Hanks article. While this is appreciated, you didn't include any copyright info on the images. If they are movie stills you grabbed yourself, they're probably covered under fair use. If you lifted them off the Internet, they're not. Please visit the image pages and update the copyright information. Thanks! — Frecklefoot | Talk 19:04, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)
Hi there DrBat. I saw you replaced the image i had for Kevin Smith (actor), while it is a good image of him, there is no copy right information for the picture. That and i can see you got it off of some web site, I am reverting website back to what it was. I like the picture i had better and until you add copyright information to it, I recommend not having it linked. You can find image copyright tages here [copyright tags]. Take care. Yet more Image Problems
[edit]You can't take images from other sites that have done work on them, like http://www.uncannyxmen.net/ I'm imagevio-ing all the ones I can find taken from there, or from anywhere else I recognise. SoM 21:50, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I just sent an e-mail to the UXM mod asking about fair use of the images. Though seeing how Wikipedia is a nonprofit site, and the images originally appeared in comicbooks, I dont see why there'd be a problem.
I've had "issues" with that guy before over the use of images from that site. I didn't want to risk getting into another pointless fight.
- That being said, whats up with reversing the #302 cover? How is #390 ok with the fair use policy but #302 isnt? --DrBat 17:02, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You didn't tag it with {x{bookcover}x} or {x{fairuse}x} (remove the Xs to use). All images have to be tagged, by policy (plus, secondarily, that's a really vugly pic. If you'd tagged and given a source, I would have left it though). SoM 17:41, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Re: Image:Xm078.jpg.
You don't think it may have been a possibly good idea to at the very least *hide* that it was from an illegal download?! SoM 21:38, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- How is it illegal? Its a cover. --DrBat 22:00, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Look at the "barcode": it's signed "Rougher @ alt.binaries.pictures.comics". That newsgroup exists pretty much to scan whole comics for illegal distribution, apparently - SoM 22:55, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- It's fair use as long as you scanned the cover yourself. If you took it from another web site, without permission, we can't use it. If it was lifted from another website with permission, that needs to be noted on the image page. — Frecklefoot | Talk 22:05, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
- Then I guess we need to take down all those 'classic covers' (i.e. Captain America Comics #1, ect) because I doubt anyone here actually has those issues. --DrBat 22:13, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Bad choice of example - the Cap part of that issue's been reprinted at least twice (once in paperback, once in hardback) in the last ten years, and the whole issue's going to be reprinted in the Golden Age Cap Masterworks later this year. SoM 22:55, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- You could tell if the scan was from a trade-collection because it'd appear cleaned up, enhanced, ect. The covers here have a grainy look to them, and the color is faded. --DrBat 23:21, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Your userpage does not exist, so...
[edit]Hi DrBat/Archive 1, I've noticed that you currently don't have a userpage. Not a problem in itself, but it makes your name appear as a redlink when signing talk pages, or when seen in Special:Recentchanges. Some users feel that lack of a userpage is an indication that a user may be a troll, sockpuppet, or simply a newbie. One simple solution, if you don't want to create a userpage, is to edit your userpage and insert the following:
- REDIRECT [[User talk:DrBat/Archive 1]]
This will make your userpage a redirect to your talk page. If you ever want to create a user page, follow this link:

Cut-and-paste moving
[edit]Cut & paste moving = Bad Idea™
See Meta:Help:Renaming (moving) a page - SoM 19:17, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- The "(comics)" text at the end of the entry is usually given when another entry has the same name. For example, Wolverine the comicbook character's entry is "Wolverine (comics)" because there is already an entry for the animal "Wolverine." The same goes for other names, such as "Storm" "Kingpin" "Daredevil" and other names that are based on pre-existing topics. However, if there is no pre-existing entry on the topic the entry doesnt need (comics) after the name (Maggott, Cecilia Reyes, ect). "Agent X" redirected to "Agent X (comics)" which just seemed redundant. --DrBat 19:30, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, but that's Not The Way To Move Things. Did you actually READ the page I linked to? You could have just "Move this page"d before, now it'll have to be listed on Wikipedia:Requested moves to do it. SoM 23:23, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Like I said, you CAN just use the move button if you haven't frelled up with a cut/paste first. SoM 14:20, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Marrina
[edit]Re: Marrina. Yes, I see that you credited, but did you get permission? SoM 17:46, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I dont think they're the ones who came up with the text; I think its from the original Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series.
- Definately not allowed to use it, if that's true. Copyvioing a copyvio is still a... well, you get the picture.
- Also, did you know Answers.Com has copied word for word the Wikipedia entries (they source Wiki though). Is that legal? --DrBat 19:00, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yup, as long as the redistribution is under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. This doesn't apply to most sites, since they're NOT GFDL (or a licence which is as, or more, permissive), or public domain. SoM 19:18, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Image:NewmutantsWindsorSmith.png
[edit]Is by Art Adams. And, since the page that panel's taken from says so directly above it, I'm betting you took that from another site that didn't mention who did it, and you didn't actually scan it yourself, eh? SoM 18:56, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Sentry
[edit]- Im trying to move Sentry (comics) to Sentry but Im getting an error message. Could you help? --DrBat 14:43, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
You'll need to Request a move. There was a page there before. SoM 23:17, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Saturation
[edit]Could you please' stop posting hugely over-saturated PNGs? They look ridiculous (and, if you're nicking them from another site then over-saturating them & converting them to PNG before posting them, still not allowed) - SoM 13:07, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- How do they look ridiculous?
- Compare the images to the comics they come from (since, to have scanned them, obviously you have the issues) and you'll see what I mean
- So because they're of a better quality than the grainy look of pages that are scanned it looks ridiculous? --DrBat 14:11, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- It is possible to correct that, where necessary, without making all the colours painfully dayglo. Usually by rescanning in the first place. Seriously - hold the comic up to the screen and look back and forth between that and one of your images, post you "working" on them. Unless your monitor already needs reset, they'll look like completely different images - and not in a good way. - SoM 14:41, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

- And how are PNGs not allowed? --DrBat 13:27, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- PNGs are allowed. It's the "nicking them from another site" bit that would be the problem, over-saturated or no. - SoM 13:59, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Image:AoABlink.png What are your thoughts on this version compared to the original? --DrBat 00:12, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)
It's too bleached out - both her skin and clothes are too light (that said, I hadn't noticed how dull the scan I uploaded was. Hmmm....) - SoM 00:46, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
BTW, I think I forgot to mention - there's no point in taking a JPG and converting it to a PNG. The JPEG degredation doesn't get undone by the change - all you do is increase the file size. - SoM 15:26, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hello, there is some concern about a possible copyvio in the Aileen Wuornos article. Large chunks of this edit [1], made by you on 11 Feb, is directly copied from Crime Library. Did you have permission to use this text? Securiger 16:57, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Magneto image
[edit]Regarding my removal of Image:Erikmagda.jpg from the article on Magneto: I agree that it's a good series of panels, but the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. The drawings in those panels aren't terribly interesting which leaves the text to convey the message but the fuzziness of the image means the text is barely legible. That's why I feel the text of the article can stand on its own without the image.
I don't want any hard feelings to develop over this one image. You've contributed a lot of great stuff to the Wikipedia, I simply don't find this image compelling. --NormanEinstein 13:58, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
What resolution do you run your monitor at?
[edit]Serious question - I get the feeling from your edits that your desktop is at least 1280px wide, maybe more.
If you are, drop down to 1024*768 (or lower) for a moment and look at some of your edits (with the default skin). The text is crammed into a tiny gap at points between the superherobox and the picture you've often inserted beside it. Anything over 180px (the default for a |thumb|nailed image) is getting too wide for said space. -SoM
Actually, my monitor is 1024. --DrBat 23:57, Apr 17, 2005 (UTC)

- Ah. Another Invisible Kid situation (FTR, post-ZH Lyle was meant to be gay, but the writers pulled the revelation after it became clear the issue where it would be revealed was their last issue, and the following writers never picked up on it. There was a lot of controversy over the fact that it was pulled after the writers had said it was going to be in the issue.) In this case, it's one step further - not only was it never made clear in the comics, but it was contradicted later by the explicit statement that she was of non-Earth heritage, which makes it impossible she's of Jewish blood at the least - SoM 22:18, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tagging
[edit]Could you stop tagging small excerpts from covers as covers, please? It's got to be the whole cover, in essence, to tag as a cover (and, if it's the cover of an individual issue rather than a squarebound TPB or graphic novel, use the new(ish) tag {{comiccover}} now). If it's a small excerpt, you need to use {{fairuse}}
And you can't just say "Released beforehand as a preview". Always say exactly where you got it - if it's taken from another site, you need to link to the page you got it from, to be safe. Even if it comes from your own scanner/camera, you need to say that. - SoM 02:39, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
And, FTR, I didn't change Image:Polaris166.png because of that. I changed it because it was badly cropped - the top of her head was lopped off for cripes' sake! (And, on another note, you're still not LINKING) - SoM 23:38, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
Only the top of her hair was (which was how the wallpaper was made. And besides, the image is of a better quality. --DrBat 00:41, May 14, 2005 (UTC)
It can't be of a better quality if it's cropped as badly as it was. Maybe the wallpaper was like that (I wouldn't know, I don't have link to it...), but to go down to her knees while having the top of her head (which, photographically, includes the hair) looks awful. The human eye automatically goes to the most visible feature 25-40% from the top of a picture. Which, since the head is so high, means your version is centred on her breasts... - SoM 15:21, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
This is the link. http://www.marvel.com/wallpaper/papers/x-men_166_1280.jpg And when I say better quality, I mean the way image shows (i.e. how it shows up more clearly). --DrBat 19:41, May 14, 2005 (UTC)

Did you ask permission before taking images from http://abs-cards.net/checklists/index.html ? It's a private site, so you can't just take them and tag them {{promotional}}. - SoM 18:41, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
- I e-mailed the moderator of the site asking permission, and she replied last Tuesday saying "Sure, no problem". --DrBat 19:02, May 19, 2005 (UTC)
BTW, I didn't revert the DP image over that, since I didn't notice it until afterward. I reverted it because (a) it's hugely non-current (it doesn't even have his trademark belt), (b) there's no artist credited and (c) it misses the point of DP in most ways, since he's as comedic as he's deadly.
And, even if you're telling the truth over the permission, there's still no way you should be tagging them with {{promotional}}. That's for adverts/previews. - SoM 00:19, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
- I'm a cynical, cover my bee-hind b*&*(d. So sue me :p
- Nonetheless, are there any other images you have in mind that could work? --DrBat 00:33, May 20, 2005 (UTC)
- If you mean DP, I think the current, Wolverine #20 parody pic (from the C/D #15 cover, the issue out a couple of days ago) works fine. It's DP solo, has his current costume and trademark facial gesture, the clowns show the comedy and the fact that they're all dead shows, well, y'know. - SoM 01:07, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
FTR
[edit]Where the current costume's a significant abberation from a long-established look, don't be too bothered about the SHB pic matching (e.g., if they pulled the "Energy Superman" stunt now, I wouldn't be in any rush to change the box-pic for Superman). - SoM 00:39, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Fagin
[edit]Why did you delete the Fictional Jew category from Fagin? --Pagrashtak 14:34, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
- In the Fictional Jews category, there is a subcategory called 'Anti-Semitic Characters', which Fagin belongs to. --DrBat 22:35, July 22, 2005 (UTC)
- Ah. I saw that category and didn't realize it was a subcat. You might want to rename it something more descriptive like "Fictional Jews portrayed unfavorably". The portrayal of Fagin may be anti-Semitic, but Fagin is not an anti-Semitic character, as he is not prejudiced against Jews. --Pagrashtak 04:13, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I removed your cut-and-paste job from the article, as 1) I suspect there's a possible violation of copyright there (esp. since there's a link to where the text was taken from), and 2) it makes little sense in situ. Moreover, you took me to task over, quote unquote, making a bigger deal out of the matter, and then you proceed to add more; to what end? If you're trying to make a point, fine, but talk pages are a better place for it. Fastbak77 01:15, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
- That was just a direct quote from her. Second, I still think the part on the whole "Superman helping the Africans" 'controversy' was too slanted against her. All you did was remove the negative adjectives describing Chuck Austen and John Byrne. --DrBat 17:40, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
Bisexual Marvel
[edit]Out of curiosity, and for the spirit of trivia, what other bisexual characters are there in the Marvel Universe? Interested as I am in depictions of sexuality in pop culture and a bit of a X-geek, I'd be quite interested in Marvelous bis. Oh, and for the sake of accuracy too, of course: if there are none (and I suppose there are, as you said so) it can be reversed to only bi character etc. Cheers, Zeppocity 13:59, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- http://www.gayleague.com/gay/characters/index.php --DrBat 14:01, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Last time I checked the site out (the first, as well) it was down. Not that brilliant a source though, claiming as it does that transexuality, asexuality, and one flirting instance with someone of the same sex classify such and such characters as bisexual. Some interesting examples despite those, though. Oh, by the way, and despite you obviously not engaging in discussing this, I've readded the bit on fan reaction for the simple fact that I see, online, in particular, very little acknowledgement of Mystique's sexuality. Not to say that this is particularly significant, but in terms of pure trivia, I find it interesting that very rarely is she analyzed or even very basically described as having a bisexual orientation. So if you intend to revert that bit again, please at least try and toss a word into the air as to the reason; it's good conduct. Cheers, Zeppocity 14:43, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, my intentions werent for being rude.
- Did you read the Mystique series? There were references to her sexuality and her relationship w/Destiny. And just because some fans dont mention it doesnt mean they dont know about it. I dont think its a case of it being something most fans dont know about. --DrBat 14:47, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
- Dammit, I'd written a whole response that has apparently disappeared into nothing (I'm hoping I didn't accidentally post it elsewhere, which would just be... surreal)... anyway, summing up what I said: No, I hadn't read the Mystique series, so thanks very much for the info on that. However, I still think that it's a point of interest that, unlike other depictions of alternative sexuality in comics (Northstar being an obvious example), Mystique hasn't garnered much discussion or controversy (not a point of complaint at all, but an interesting fact). The point being, not that fans don't know she's bi, but rather, that it generally doesn't seem to make half the difference that she isn't straight than with other characters. There are, I am aware, some obvious reasons for this, but I still see the point as being an interesting piece of trivia. Go ahead and change the current, corrected version of it, but I think it's appropriate... no? Zeppocity 15:34, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- I'm ok with the current version. I just changed the word 'notorious' to 'well-known' because 'notorious' is a negative word (Known widely and usually unfavorably; infamous). --DrBat 16:03, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, really? Sorry about that; English not being my mother-tongue, I think the equivalent Portuguese words (notável, notório), which are neutral, made me assume notorious was too... Sorry about that, and well, good to know there's an agreement. ;) Zeppocity 16:07, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

The above image is listed as the Cover art to GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #6. However there is no logo on the image and no source is given for where the scan came from. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know the source and why there's no logo, ta. Steve block talk 15:14, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

DrBat vs. Mel Gibson
[edit]I'm wondering what do you have against Mel Gibson? Seriously, what did he ever do to you to make you clearly hate him so much, as you've shown with your POV edits? -- Judson 12:04, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- Everything I posted was a fact. --DrBat 18:05, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
