- And almost two and a half years later, you get a response :-) The first marquess and his ancestors were from Ireland and the marquessate is believed to refer to Ely O'Carroll, County Laois rather than Ely, Cambs. Craigy (talk?) 22:51, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

You can go up the list to find the previous marquesses. This is genealogical reference only, no history. You are correct in your assessment that the 'Ely' does not refer to Ely, Cambs.
