Black Hole Lensing Animation

[edit]

How did you produce the animation at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Black_hole_lensing_web.gif -- also at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Black_hole_lensing_web.gif Stephanwehner (talk) 02:47, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I did not create the animation, I just optimised it - the original was an enormous filesize, as I recall, and badly needed reducing. ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 01:37, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, do you know the source of this file, BlackHole_Lensing_2.gif, does'snt exist anymore? Sincerely. Gerardgiraud (talk) 16:14, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that. I'm sorry to hear it, but I didn't delete it. ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 15:34, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! My name is Mike, and I wanted to let you know that this article is up for Featured Article Status! It is SOOO CLOSE! And as someone who has worked on this article a lot in the past (having checked the history) I thought you could help me fix the inline citations. As I have none of the books in question, I am out of luck, but thought real enthusiasts might be able to help. So, please help, or get those who you know can to help make Tolkien a featured article! Thanks much! Judgesurreal777 18:10, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-- Oh no, I don't take it personally :) Just keep in mind the objections of the citation obsessed! Thanks much, Judgesurreal777 02:39, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I noticed that you did link pruning at J. R. R. Tolkien. Great work, thanks!.

You may be interested in my tool for exactly that purpose. Just copy User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to User:Urbane legend/monobook.js (if you know what you are doing, just copy the relevant bits). Then clear the cache by pressing Control-Shift-R (Firefox) or Control-F5 (IE). Then when you edit, you will get another two tabs at the top for date pruning and unit formatting. Caveat emptor.

In addition, I have made a new proposal about date links at: Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style_(dates_and_numbers)#linking_of_dates. Feel free to support or oppose it. Regards. bobblewik 19:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your compliment. I have read the controversy about the date-link script in your user page and I've decided not to use it (the page I did implement it on has been reverted). While I agree with your viewpoint that thousands upon thousands of unnecessary links to Wednesday July 29, 1973 and the like are annoying examples of bad style, I can't approve of the use of a tool that does this automatically without better consensus. That said, it is a pet peeve of mine - most datelinks are totally useless and frequently duplicated within articles. Births and deaths, yes - but too often every date/year in an article is a link - irrespective of how trivial. - UrbaneLegend 23:10, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I entirely understand your caution. I was merely suggesting that if you were wanting to delink a single article, you could use the tool. It has no capability to do multiple articles automatically. I see you tried it out on Stephen Sondheim and then reverted yourself. I fully accept your caution and I am glad that you considered it anyway. Thank you for your supporting vote in the Manual of style proposal too. Hopefully that will move us towards the consensus to which you refer. bobblewik 23:33, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Bow Tie

[edit]

Thankyou - I fully realize I should use the preview button. It's just that I do quite a bit of recent changes patrolling, and with that you have to do more and smaller edits, in order to decrease the chance of an edit conflict where someone else has begun editing the article without your changes. I suppose it's a habit i've developed from that, but now you've raised it, i'll certainly remember to use preview. Thanks! -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  11:32, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - thanks for the info on my signature. But you say it appears in white - I think that's true, but only the text should be white, with a bright green box for a background. Is that not how it shows up on your screen? That's how I see it, which should make it v prominent indeed. If it's not showing up properly, I'll tweak it. -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  12:31, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks, I'll see what I can do. -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  12:46, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - one last thing - can I check if my signature is more readable now? I've switched from hexadecimal to normal, named colours. Here it is: -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  12:58, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - I see below that those posters have confused you with me! Strange. I reverted their edits using VandalProof, so they should have a perfectly good link to me. I'll see what I can do, but they're anonymous IPs. I'd actually agree totally with the first of the two, but I'd like to have seen words to that effect on the talkpage or edit summary - some people use exactly the same word mindlessly, as an insult, and some (including me) would use it correctly. -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  12:36, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i dont agree with...

[edit]

i wasnt vandalising http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunters_Point%2C_San_Francisco%2C_California I just changed from "African-American" to Black, because not all Blacks come from Africa, and yet there is white Africans... What would you call a person from Jamaica, South India, or Central/South America with Black skin color?

Kindly refrain from accusing me of accusing you of vandalism. You have confused me with someone else, I'm afraid. Check whose talk page you're writing on, in future. Oh, and always sign your comments. ▫ UrbaneLegend talk 09:00, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

flag desceration

[edit]

it is contreversial...screw you james

You have confused me with someone else. I've never edited Flag desecration or had any correspondence with you, whoever you are. My name isn't even James. Please check who's talk page you are posting on in future, especially when making abusive posts. Do it again and you'll be reported. ▫ UrbaneLegend talk 09:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monobook tool

[edit]

Hi,

I don't know if you are aware of my tool to reduce unnecessary links to solitary months/years.

You only need a single click on a 'dates' tab in edit mode. If you want to use it, simply copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to User:Urbane legend/monobook.js. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work.

Please feel free try it out. It also has a 'units' tab. Regards. bobblewik 23:51, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize about my comments about you and I apologize to you about my mistake. Thank you for correcting me. Fg1234567892000 14:47, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks!

[edit]

Thanks for editing that link on my talkpage - I can't believe I overlooked something that simple! And I hope you don't mind my using your message box - it is all licensed under GFDL, after all; thanks again for the assistance. -- (James McNally)  (talkpage)  13:04, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

[edit]

I was reading about extinction, then black holes, and that led me to your page. Love Kate Bush as well! Just wanted to say hi. This account caused me to create a new account, therefore a new Wiki contributor. Keep up the good work.

(PS. I am not sure if it's acceptable to type this in this page, but I didn't find any other place. If it is, please forgive).

Fair use rationale for Image:Shelobpj.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Shelobpj.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:17, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up. That picture was uploaded way back in my wikichildhood. I've added a more comprehensive fair use rationale for the image now. ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 11:39, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It helps if you can put the rationale into the standard template from, many other fair-use images have, that way I can 'fast-scan' when analyising themSfan00 IMG (talk) 11:45, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can't figure out how to make the template work. *shrug* ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 11:50, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:Shelobpj.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Shelobpj.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:32, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, template filled and added. Copyright holder clearly identified (New Line Cinema) and rationale transferred from my previous paragraph of text into template format. Please provide any further feedback on how to make this image pass muster, if necessary. ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 23:02, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now meets all relevant criteria. Might also be possible to use the image in Fictional spiders with a modfied rationale BTW. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:05, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

I appreciate you creating articles of note. But is it possible to include a reference with the initial edit. It saves me time having to tag your article with "unref" and then saves you time having to remove the "unref" tag. Thank you for your understanding.Calaka (talk) 11:46, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I understand completely, and I would have loved to have added my references upon page creation, but my boss decided that I'd spent too long messing around on Wikipedia for one shift and wanted me to do some work. I have references, and they will be added as soon as I'm able! :-) ▫ Urbane Legend chinwag 15:02, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is perfectly alright! You have to forgive me for not knowing your external circumstances! ;) Thank you for going along with it! Brilliant article! Please keep up the great work (when time allows hehe). Cheers. Calaka (talk) 07:25, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Black Hole Lensing Animation Source

[edit]

Dear Urbane Legend,

I am a graphic designer who is several hours into the hunt for the source file for the black hole lensing animation which you optimized. All credits point back to you, but I am in need of a higher resolution version for use in my project. Would you be able to point me in the correct direction to continue looking? I have searched multiple archives and read through hundreds of links to try to uncover it but all roads lead back to you. Please help. :-) Thanks so much!
