(Maurice) Denton Welch (1915-48) was born in Shanghai and spent some of his childhood in China before returning to England, where he lived until his death. Originally intending to become an artist, his life was changed at the age of twenty, when he was run down by a car while bicycling and severely injured. He was invalided for the rest of his life, often in considerable pain. His autobiographical book about his childhood, Maiden Voyage was published in 1953, and aided by publicity headed by the appreciation and patronage of Edith Sitwell became a minor success. In Youth is Pleasure (1944) a novel about adolescence and Brave and Cruel (1949) a collection of short stories followed. A Voice Through a Cloud was published posthumously in 1950.

[edit]The link to "Maiden Voyage" goes to a Herbie Hancock jazz album rather than the Welch book of the same name.
Age at Birth
[edit]According to the main article Welch was born at the age of 97. I feel that this cannot be correct.
