[edit]To address the problem of categorising former townships which are now cities (such as Streetsboro), I've created the category, "Defunct townships in Ohio". For more details, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio townships. -SwissCelt 19:52, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
Notable Residents from Streetsboro
[edit]This category, which is common in articles like these, has been added to encourage others to contribute names and information about notable residents from Streetsboro. Please give it time to work. I will monitor it's progress or lack of it.Godofredo29 (talk) 18:47, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- If you find a notable native or resident, please put him/her there. However, having a header like this with absolutely nothing under it is problematic, so please don't restore it without a notable native or resident. Nyttend (talk) 21:35, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
The patrons of the Pierce Streetsboro Library will certainly be the poorer for your action. Such a header is clearly in keeping with the spirit of Wikipedia, inviting its users to supply information that is not available elsewhere. It in no way misinforms or misleads the user. If you need proof of this, look at the article on Portsmouth, Ohio.Godofredo29 (talk) 21:58, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- I concur with Nyttend. An empty heading gives the article an unfinished feeling and in no way promotes that section being expanded. Conversely, not having the section hardly prevents one from being created. If notable natives and/or residents can be found and included in a section, by all means, create one and list them (with sources of course). I'm not sure how that adversely affects patrons of Streetsboro's library, nor is it against the "spirit" of Wikipedia. The "spirit" of Wikipedia is creating verifiable, well-written, and encyclopedic articles, not collecting a bunch of random trivia and heresay. Be careful when citing other articles as examples, though. Unless that article has been a featured article, chances are it has a slew of problems of its own. Articles like Cleveland, Ohio, New York City, and Ann Arbor, Michigan have been featured among many others as part of the WP:CITY project and are great examples of how a finished article should and could look. --JonRidinger (talk) 01:11, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
You said: "The 'spirit' of Wikipedia is creating verifiable, well-written, and encyclopedic articles, not collecting a bunch of random trivia and heresay." Clearly, that is not the understanding of many who use and contribute to Wikipedia and who value content over style. And, I'm not sure where either of you assume the authority to make such decisions as you do on their behalf. However, I was willing to drop the whole thing until I found something to put with my heading. Why did you restore it? Someone should also get rid of the comment above about WSTB as there has been an article about it for some time.Godofredo29 (talk) 13:14, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- There are set policies and guidelines set up by Wikipedia to create high-quality articles; these policies include things on what to and what not to include, how to write it, and how to cite sources among many other things. Become familiar with these. Both Nyttend and myself have been editing for many years and are largely familiar with those policies as are many other editors, which comes from experience and editing many different articles. One such policy is not removing parts of a discussion thread just because you want to "drop it." If you really want to drop it, you won't write anything back. As soon as you do write something and press "save" it will be seen by others. Trust me, I was much like you when I started in seeing Wikipedia as a place I could add any information I knew to articles I was familiar with. What I discovered over time is that just because I know something doesn't mean it is important enough to include in an article and also without a 3rd party reliable published source, there's no way to prove what I know is an actual fact. --JonRidinger (talk) 14:02, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Godofredo, you may have heard the slogan, "Wikipedia: The encyclopedia anyone can edit." What gives Jon and Nyttend the "authority" to make the decisions they do, besides their experience in collaborating on the high quality articles to which we refer, is the same entity that gives you the authority to edit the articles as well. I encourage you to do so; and I encourage you to collaborate with us, as I know the three of us all have personal interests in Streetsboro. Oh, and as for the comment about WSTB, you should have checked the date- it was from 2005, and in fact the article about the station came as a direct result. Of course, even that article can be improved. Feel free! -- JeffBillman (talk) 00:52, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- By the way, who might be some candidates for notable residents from Streetsboro? Vince Koza (former sports anchor, WLIO-TV in Lima, Ohio) is all I can come up with, and I don't think he quite makes the cut. -- JeffBillman (talk) 01:57, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
