Mobile app logout issue

I'm using am Android phone, using dark mode for the Wikipedia app. On the mobile app, usually when I load talk pages, they render as a white mode web page, and I'll be logged out. Sometimes I can work around it, but both the work around and the error aren't consistent.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 16:05, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

I think the error occurs if I directly open the talk page link - if I navigate there from the article/Wikipedia space via the drop down, then it works fine and I'm not logged out.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 16:50, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

For what it's worth, this sometimes happens to me, as well. But I'm using the website on iOS Safari, not the Android app. And I've never had any issues with logging back in. TheLegendofGanon (talk) 09:53, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Indigenous identity friad

Hello I have attempted to go through the proper channels in wiki. A profile is being inaccurately listed as indigenous for a person who has no indigenous ancestry. This type of misinformation is a form of colonial erasure and upholds racism. I have opened what I hope would be a dialogue about it, as an indigenous person myself this is a very important issue to me but instead of being heard with understanding the person in the chat and who is exclusively modifying this wiki page is arguing with me and gaslighting my valid concerns. Can somebody who is not bias please come be apart of this discussion and hear out why they change is necessary and should be protected. This is the dialogue. It should be noted that [1] doesn't provide evidence supporting the conclusion that Lauzon is not Indigenous. I did cite it in the article as evidence that her identity has been called into question, but since the evidence isn't shown in the report like it is for other reporting on "Pretendians", I think accepting it as fact enough to remove "Metis" from the lede would fall foul of WP:GRAPEVINE. It seems to me that you claim to have actual, reliable evidence that she isn't indigenous. Yet you refuse to provide it, citing privacy issues. Island of Montreal

Hello,

On the page Island of Montreal, the map in the infobox displays the place name to the right of the coordinates, overlapping with the data under the map. Would someone know how to put the place name above the coordinates, as there is plenty of space there? Thanks.

@Josh Haines -- a few things on this topic. Before moving it over, please take some time to review WP:BLP as this article still has some problems that should be addressed before you bring more attention to it, and it might subsequently be speedily deleted. The second is to take a moment to look at WP:PAID as it looks like (based on your username) you might have a financial relationship with Woodall. Hi, I just joined on as an editor. I am referenced on many pages on Wikipedia but don't have my own page to link those reference to. Instead, they are credited to someone who has the same name as me. noindex tag found for page, despite no flags/banners

Hello, I have recently published a page under the following link: Matatia Foa'i and it was approved by Wikipedia and published onto the main namespace. The page appears in Wikipedia's internal search results and does not have any visible flags, banners, or issues that I can identify. However, when I checked the source code, I found a noindex tag (<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow">), which prevents the page from being indexed by search engines like Google. If possible, i would really appreciate knowing why the noindex tag has been applied to this page and what steps I can take to have the tag removed so the page can be indexed. The page is based on reliable and independent sources and meets the notability guidelines to the best of my knowledge. Citation for an edit

I would like to add the name of a distant relative to the Wiki page "Volga Germans", section entitled "Notable people of Volga German descent". This person already has a Wikipedia page, but his name is not on this list. I know only from family oral history that he belongs on this list, his grandfather and my great-grandfather were brothers who emigrated together from Saratov, Russia to Canada in 1907. I have seen their arrival record on the Ancestry website. Other than that, I do not have any official sources I can cite. Is this sufficient citation? kcmeowski (talk) 05:00, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

If you're asking for a separate website, then English-language Wikipedia, which is where you are, isn't the place to ask. why my edits are not visible on the page??

Use of surname vs maiden name in article body

I’m in a disagreement with another editor at Jennifer Carroll MacNeill (née Carroll) regarding the use of her maiden name in the Early Life section. The other editor used Carroll, citing Hillary Clinton, where Rodham is used for events before her marriage to Bill Clinton. I don't like that inconsistent use of Clinton either, but I assume the reason is that she was notable as Hillary Rodham (due to the size of that article's talk page, I haven’t been able to confirm this) Carroll MacNeill however seems to just be notable under her married name, so I believe that should be used consistently.

It looks like that sort of consistency is mostly noted with things gendered pronouns rather than surnames. Is there something in the MOS that I'm missing, or is there not really a specific rule or suggestion for this kind of scenario? LaffyTaffer (talk) 20:37, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Another editor has removed the subject's surname entirely from that section to avoid the disagreement, however I'm still interested to know if there's a guideline to this. I've just looked at Muhammad Ali and seen that he's referred to as Clay for events from before his name change, so I'm very likely wrong here(I expected as much which is why I'm here rather than the article's talk page), however it seems strange to not talk about article subjects using a consistent name throughout, and I'd rather not use WP:OTHERSTUFF as the sole justification. There's no reason to be consistent about a subject's name, when they themselves changed it. Before she changed her name, she was born and grew up as Jennifer Carroll, so she should be referred to by that name. @Greatest125 The new pages patrol are heavily backlogged. In a brief look, I think that the current {{Primary sources}} tag is exactly correct. None of the sources used meet the golden rules, as far as I can tell, since they are mainly primary ones that are either not independent or don't have significant coverage of Klopp. That means the articles struggles to show how she is notable as an academic. Kind of urgent

I just posted a question for the first of all the candidates over at the Arb Committee site, and — because I rarely use the Source Editor — ran into trouble right away. I think the candidate I was writing to was the last one on the list, Krakatoa Katie.

At any rate, my message didn't get into a box — there are some stray numbers on the first and last paragraph — and there's an apostrophe just before the first character of the italicized paragraph. I've come here for help rather than writing the election coordinators because it didn't seem they were actually first responders.

@Maproom, now that I went back to that location I see that the candidate to whom I posted was CaptainEek, not Krakatoa Katie. The first candidate on the list, not the last one. And my message looks a little more correctly formatted than it did earlier. @Maproom and @Michael D. Turnbull, I'm giving up for now on trying to go further in using the Source Editor template to add the question I was hoping to ask all the Arb Committee election candidates. At least it got posted to two of them.

Even though each of you helped me, I found that copying the coding from the questions for one candidate over to the questions for another just didn't work for me. Copying and pasting should be a very simple procedure, but not in the Source Editor.

If we can't use the simple Visual Editor to ask questions in an election or elsewhere, I think a tutorial with solid practice is required. Interlanguage linking to wrong page

Hi there, I'm having an issue that I'm not sure how to fix. On the enwiki page Slávik Awards, all three interlanguage links (Czech, Polish, Slovak) are redirecting to Zlatý slavík (this is actually a separate award), instead of the correct one (https://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A1vik_(anketa) Slávik (anketa) being an example). Efn template

Hello, I'm trying to change an indirectly related reference to a note. The problem is that the efn tag doesn't work because there are two links in the body of that reference. I only know the basic way of using the efn template. Namely, starting with {{efn| and ending with two curly brackets pointed in the opposite direction. I know the two links (starting with <ref>) are the problem, because if they are deleted, the ref. is changed to a note. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 13:38, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

JimPercy, based on your recent contribs I presume this is about Paul Martin (illustrator)? There are a lot of notes and refs both in that article, so I'm unable to narrow down where your problem may lie.

It's been my experience that <ref>...</ref> tags work as usual within {{efn}}. It's somewhat common to substantiate explanatory footnotes with a supporting reference. External links shouldn't be broken by placing them inside {{efn}} either. So it's not entirely clear what doesn't work indicates here, nor your end goal for the text display.

Re: "Paul Martin (illustrator)" reference 260. I was simply trying to change it from a ref. to a note, by changing the opening and closing <ref> tags to opening and closing efn tags. It did not work. Thanks, but what I was really trying to do was transfer the ENTIRE ref. 260 to a note. That means everything from the words "This is indirectly related...TO...in print on Sep 22, 1933." JimPercy (talk) 17:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Looks like I duplicated the error, but correctly identified the fix.

To explain, many templates ({{efn}} is one), will accept unnamed parameters, which on the backend are handled as if named by numerals. For certain values, usually including special characters, some part of the software will misinterpret unless the unnamed parameter is explicitly defined with its positional numeral. The references here had a lot of = inside external links (i.e. not in nested template transclusions), which I suspect caused the error, although the error originating from the MediaWiki Extension:Cite rather than the efn template itself was pretty unexpected and unhelpful toward diagnosis. Hello there, I have requested that Romanian Editors to not infringe the Wikimedia Foundation Code of Ethics, and presented reliable proof that @Gdaniel111 was biased and posted non provable personal opinions when he modified the content of Article in Romanian Language "Calin Georgescu" and that they inflict even street unrest through these actions, and then the Admin @Giku has blocked my account in all possible situations with unlimited period, proof of their accumulated plan to eradicate all other opinions than their biased opinions, is the fact that my English Edited Article = in En.Wiki = which was used as reference for the Romanian Article, was again modified swiftly with unproven content such as "Pro-Legionar" (corected = not repeated) , Far Right Extremist (=own opinion, based on biased media articles infringed bylaw in Romania) and "Pro-Rusian" (=not confirmed by the living person himself but induced by media articles without proof), as it was left purposely unprotected. Please, take in attention this Article because in Romania this script has already generated Social Unrest, hour by hour amplified, and I have limited resources to counteract with Romanian Admins from Wikimedia, which prove to be biased, and is amplified also by all other channels, making reference of Romanian Wiki Article for a living person, which has not contributed neither approved the content of the Article about himself on Ro-Wiki. I sincerelly doubt that a Wikipedia article can have this kind of power. All Romanian media made its own research. We only wrote what media said, Călin Georgescu's declarations and their interpretation. Romanian media did not even notice when Romanian Wikipedia surpassed the 500k-article mark several weeks ago. Suggestions for the privacy settings

Hello, IsaacGoldin1. You have a conflict of interest regarding your relative, which you should declare on your now blank userpage. Because of that COI, you should use the Articles for creation process to create a draft to be reviewed by experienced editors without a COI. The single most important thing for you to know is that an acceptable Wikipedia biography primarily summarizes what published reliable sources entirely independent of the topic (your relative in this case) say about the topic. You cannot include your reminiscences. It cannot be based on the publisher's author page or any material used to promote his books. We take source independence seriously. Please read the notability guideline for people and the notability guideline for authors. I highly recommend that you spend a few weeks improving other articles to learn about how things work and to get a sense for our Policies and guidelines. Read other biographies of authors that are rated Good articles or Featured articles and model your work on them. Once you have gathered your list of reliable sources, then format them into references with bibliographic detail. See Referencing for beginners. Read and study Your first article several times during this whole process. Search for articles having titles with specific punctuation-marks.

Hi, I'm trying to find a way of searching for all articles with titles including specific punctuation. Specifically, I'm trying to find all the articles with titles incorporating geographical co-ordinates (Təzəkənd (39° 32' N 48° 24' E), Bilasuvar is an example) by searching for "' N" or "' E". and the wording "(near" (Təzəkənd (near Surra), Davachi is an example of this). However, unfortunately the search tool tends to strip out any punctuation marks when carrying out the search, meaning a search for "' N" returns all the results for "N", and a search for "(near" tends to return all the results for "near".

The reason why I am trying to do this is because these article tend to be non-notable, since if the subject is so obscure as to only be identifiable by geographical co-ordinates or being located "near" somewhere else, typically there is nothing to say about it. Reference issue

Good morning!

Can someone help me with a citation error I keep receiving? If you're able to look at my sandbox article draft, the issue I'm having is with reference 2. I used the citation tool in visual editor several times to pull the reference, and I've checked the data manually as well and cannot figure out why I keep getting this error at the end of it:

I've read through the CS1 error help page and don't see anything under "External link in |website=". I'm betting it's something simple I've overlooked but I'd appreciate any help you can provide.

I haven’t gotten to this part yet but I was wondering if I might be able to swing it because the crime led to a law named after the victim. The law was the first of its kind in the state that made necrophilia illegal. Do you think that might be enough to get it published?

@Thesaltydispatcher: The "help" link says "This error occurs when a URL is found in any parameter that is not one of these URL-holding parameters: ..." |website= is not on the list so the error applies. website should only be used in citations which already have a link to a specific page at the website and then we don't want a second external link to distract. www. is usually omitted so I would just say |website=wndu.com, or WNDU.com as they do themselves. You could also say |publisher=[[WNDU-TV]] instead (not in addition) to link WNDU-TV. Wikilinks are allowed. |website=[[WNDU-TV]] should only be used if the website itself is called WNDU-TV. Title field when citing a web source without a title (e.g. long-form social media posts)

Hi all. I came across a citation (#24 on Wisdom (albatross)) of a Facebook post from an official United States Fish and Wildlife Service Facebook page that has the Missing or empty |title= error. I looked through some of the help pages for citations and can't find any guidance on what to do when citing a web source that genuinely does not have a title (even the <title> tag of the page is just "Facebook") and the text within the source is longer than, say, a tweet (where you'd use the whole tweet as the title.) Is there any standard here? (I suppose the source could just be replaced with a different source per WP:RSPFB, but the source itself here seems acceptable -- it's an official post from a US governmental agency.) Thank you! Regardless, I've thought for many years that cs1|2 should have an |incipit= parameter for those occasions (especially in older newspapers) where the 'article' is a paragraph or three without title. So too, I think that social media posts would be a suitable use for |incipit=. Alas, no such parameter, but you might write:

|title=Wisdom returns to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge...

The same Facebook post has been used twice in the article, the first time with title=Wisdom returns to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge bringing more Thanksgiving joy to the Midway Atoll staff who celebrate witnessing Wisdom reaching at least 74 years old this coming winter. so the two references could be given a common reference name. There are some cs1|2 parameters where the assigned value none has meaning (|type=, |postscript=). In {{cite web}}, |title=none has no special meaning:

{{cite web |title=none |url=//example.com}} → "none".

Only in {{cite journal}} does |title=none have meaning – is suppresses title display entirely:

You are free to delete any unsourced assertion in any article at any time, but there is a ref at the end of the paragraph that might be intended to cover the whole paragraph. it's a whole lot better to try to discuss it first. step 1: add a {{Citation needed}} after the assertion. Step 2: add a section to the article's talk page requesting help to find a source. Step 3: wait about a week. Step 4: If there is no discussion, remove the material from the article. It is very important to avoid being contentious during all this mess: we are supposed to be trying to build an encyclopedia, not acting as battleground. Discussing unification of article and category title

Members of the Senegalese Lebu people are collected in Category:Lebou people. The different spelling is certainly not helpful. Where is a place to discuss which spelling should be used? --KnightMove (talk) 17:49, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

Probably in Talk:Lebu people. You could do it in Category talk:Lebou people, but I doubt if many people will see if there.

There is a redirect Lebou people which directs to Lebu people so the difference is not a problem. But I agree it would be neater if they agreed. ColinFine (talk) 18:24, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

Swap article and redirect that differ only by capitalization

At present, the article is Wikiwoods and the redirect is WikiWoods. These capitalizations should be swapped. The German version is correct at w:de:WikiWoods.
