Intertextual Refs - Sources Needed

Intertextual References was tagged for lacking sourcing since mid-2009. In that time no sources were added, and it's unclear how much of this might be original research. While direct and explicit refs might be appropriate to include without sourcing, it seems unlikely that that applies to the entire list, and I believe there may be a fair amount of cruft (or even outright inaccuracies) here. Please feel free to readd with appropriate sourcing or where the reference is made explicit...though at that point there should be context provided, not just a list of items.

As with most of Stephen King's novels many elements of real life popular culture are mentioned in each of the Dark Tower novels including other books, poetry, songs, and movies. These works may be mentioned in passing or often as important plot devices.

Included here is a list of such references. All works mentioned below occur within the books' narrative and do not include any mention in the foreword or afterword of the books:

Discordia game currently not usable

I tried to play the Discordia online game. First I was able to register and watched the introduction. Later I tried to log on again, and that was not possible. A query to the webmaster at stephenking.com resulted in this reply:

"Discordia account creation and login are not currently working. The game is currently being rewritten for the modern web, and a new version should be out in the next month or so."

Is that worth noting in the tiny section about Discordia? And if so how - a private email is not exactly a good source. RenniePet (talk) 04:53, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Film adaptation mention in the introduction seems mistaken

The introduction states: "A film based on The Gunslinger and also serving as a sequel to the events of The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower due to the nature of said book's ending was released in August 2017." However, there is no evidence in the link provided or in the movie itself that it is a sequel for the novels. Has anybody seen this stated anywhere or is it just bogus?

The text originally read, "On March 13, 2012, it was reported that Warner Bros. Pictures was interested in making at least the first film, and would be in prime position to green-light the TV element through its sister company, HBO. Javier Bardem was originally set to play Roland, but the role was subsequently offered to Russell Crowe. Initial reports indicated filming was going to commence as early as the first quarter of 2013. Warner Bros. has since passed on the project, but Media Rights Capital has picked up and has commenced production on a film adaptation that is currently scheduled for release in July 2017 with Idris Elba as the lead character." This was supported by seven different sources, one of which is the faulty source noted by the OP. On November 22, 2016, Jsnell eliminated that paragraph and left only "A film adaptation is currently scheduled for release in July 2017 with Idris Elba as the lead character." The source for that statement, while it discusses the potential film—identifying Russell Crowe as the potential lead—does not support the statement. Jsnell's summary of changes was, "simplification of intro to removing ongoing storylines of film false starts to focus on current status of series and project." So the first problem is the unhelpful source. Originally placed at the end of the last sentence, it might have originally applied to something within that sentence that was later modified. The second problem, IMO, is that the history of how a film comes to fruition is just as interesting and valuable as box office returns, dates of release, etc. Perhaps the introduction isn't the place for it, but I think the material should be reinstated. I might work on that later.
On May 5, 2017, Nurseline247, since determined to be a sockpuppet of TotalTruthTeller24 and blocked indefinitely, modified this last sentence (marked as a "minor" revision) to read, "A film, serving as a sequel to the events of The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower is currently scheduled for release in August 2017 with Idris Elba as the lead character; due to the nature of the ending of The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower, it will adapt moments from The Gunslinger."
On August 4, 2017, ANDREWs13 added "The film was released on August 4. 2017" to the section Film Adaptation but sourced it to a page that is no longer available. (https://www.comingsoon.net/movie/the-dark-tower-2017#/slide/1) However, that release date is verified by Rotten Tomatoes (also cited by ANDREWs13 in the same edit) so, as a last resort, that source could be used for the statement in the introduction. On August 10 2017, 47.147.140.119 edited the sentence in question to read, "A film based on The Gunslinger and also serving as a sequel to the events of The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower due to the nature of said book's ending was released in August 2017." No summary was given.
One or two other minor edits were made, and then on May 17, 2019, Editchip (since confirmed as a sockpuppet of Lemaroto and blocked indefinitely), still retaining the original source citation, revised the sentence to its current edition, "A film serving as a sequel to the events of The Dark Tower was released in August 2017." The summary was "Removing double links", which makes no sense to me.
So, there you have the history of how we ended up with a random, orphan sentence that can't even be confirmed. I think I'm going to add some of that original material back in and try to find relevant sources to anything missing, but that will have to wait for another day. Shouldn't this be marked as a spoiler? The article linked itself is a spoiler clearly marked in the middle (even if the title of the article is also a spoiler). I think it's unnecessary to provide such detail to mention this book is the "next iteration" of Roland.
