[edit]Mountain Home has two McDonalds, three Subways, a Wendy's, a Jack in the Box, a Pizza Hut, a Dominoes Pizza, a Taco John's, a KFC, an arby's, and a few locally owned restraurant chains.
It also has a Wal-Mart, built across the street from the K-Mart built in the mid 90's. K-Mart and smaller department store chain, Kings, have both shut down their locations; it's believed to be due to the Wal-Mart.
As the town continues to develop more and more, rumors run rampid; supposedly, a Taco Bell cannot be built due to some sort of special deal a local Taco John's owner has. A Sizzler has been rumored in past years, as well as a mini-mall. An old bowling alley that burnt down many years ago was rumored to be burnt down on purpose for the insurance money.
Mountain Home doesn't offer much as far as entertainment is concerned. Most of the younger citizens tend to feel bored. Seeing how nearly 40% of the population is "29.6% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24," one can't help but to feel some location other than Jump n' Juice & Java-- a local coffee/juice shop equipped with a network gaming area-- would take advantage of such. (Lazer Tag, anyone?) To its credit, Mountain Home does have a number of parks, including Legacy Park, a million-dollar project equipped with extra-large playing field, shaded resting area, and pond with birds.
The town feels very old-people-oriented; although it is growing [most likely surviving off the business of the air force base 10 miles away], it tends to feel old-fashioned, and doesn't present too much opportunity for those seeking employment.
Mountain Home can get as cold as 0 degrees in the winter and as warm as about 119 in the summer. Mountain Home received a particularly generous amount of snow in 1994 and 2001, but most snow seasons tend to be bland, as most of it melts soon after accumilation.
As a joke between the younger population (particularly those fighting boredom), it is sometimes referred to as "Mountain Hell," as some feel it is an escapable black hole. In truth, while it may be boring and have little job opportunity, it offers unique charm and makes for a nice town to settle down in.
-- Hey does anybody know if there is any truth to the rumor that Mountain Home denied Cabelas a store in town? Also, is there any truth to the new Cracker Barrel rumors? --- jp
