Requested move 15 February 2018
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: move Game Boy line to Game Boy family, per the discussion below. This also creates consistency among Game Boy family, Nintendo DS family, and Nintendo 3DS family. It appears there is some support for moving all three pages to "product line" titles, but particularly since the 3DS article was not included/notified as part of this request, I'd suggest doing that as part of a new move request if necessary. - Game Boy line → ?
- Nintendo DS family → ?
– The words "line" and "family" do not seem to be part of any official name to describe the series of handheld consoles which these articles describe. In fact, amending any word to their titles seem to not be proper. I'm proposing that these to articles move to a title with a consistent/same disambiguator (such as "(brand)" or "(series)") as there seems to be no natural disambiguation title option for either of these other than moving them to their ambiguous titles ... which are currently occupied by articles representing the first-released consoles in their series. (Game Boy, Nintendo DS.) Steel1943 (talk) 20:27, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- Comment I'd say that they should be moved to Game Boy and Nintendo DS, with the respective consoles being moved to Game Boy (console) and Nintendo DS (console).ZXCVBNM (TALK) 21:24, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I was wondering about that option, considering that falls in line with the precedent at PlayStation and PlayStation (console). Steel1943 (talk) 22:23, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
@Zxcvbnm: Oh wow, I just found out that Nintendo DS family and Nintendo 3DS family are two separate articles. (I honestly didn't think the latter would even have an article for this reason.) I wonder if they should be merged? Steel1943 (talk) 22:29, 15 February 2018 (UTC)- Certainly not... the DS and 3DS lines are two distinct product lines with several different models for each line.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 00:15, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, the Nintendo DS line and the Nintendo 3DS line are two very different families of handhelds. I strongly oppose a merge. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 00:55, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

- Comment (product line) is probably more accurate than (series). Or, (brand). -- ferret (talk) 22:08, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) @Ferret: I recommend that option since the only other situation I could find for a precedent, PlayStation, has PlayStation (series) and PlayStation (brand) as incoming redirects, but not PlayStation (product line) or PlayStation (console series). (I originally considered proposing "(console series)" as their new disambiguator until I realized that disambiguator could be considered ambiguous due to the use of another word in addition to "series".) Steel1943 (talk) 22:36, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- PlayStation was originally at (brand) before being moved. -- ferret (talk) 22:42, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

OpposeAlthough I agree 'line' does not refer to a technical term for a set of game systems, Nintendo itself uses the term 'family', as in 'Nintendo 3DS family of systems'. I would say 'series' refers to a set of software, not hardware. I would support a change to 'family' or 'brand'. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 22:35, 15 February 2018 (UTC)- @P*h3i: Yeah, come to think of it, my true intent is rather to move the pages away from their current titles to really any title using their base name and a common disambiguator. I'll update my move request. Steel1943 (talk) 22:38, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- In that case, I support in the case that anything except series is used. I believe family would be the best term to use. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 22:43, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

- Oppose As proposed to switching to a parenthetical disambiguation. WP:NATURAL is preferred, and a lack of an official use of the term is not part of article naming, common usage is. It doesn't have to be official, if sources refer to a "Game Boy family", etc. Both "Game Boy family" and "Game Boy line" frequently appear in sources, as does "Game Boy brand". I have no preference over "line" vs "family" vs "brand", but it's fine being a natural part of the article title. -- ferret (talk) 22:47, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, but it would be preferrable to have all of these types of pages to have corresponding titles. No conflicts of consistency really come into this. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 22:51, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- That's really a separate issue. The pages can all be at line, or family, or whatever. Still stick to WP:NATURAL. -- ferret (talk) 22:57, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Is consensus to rename 'Game Boy line' to 'Game Boy family'? If not, please detail concerns/args below. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 02:47, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
- If no one else responds below I can confirm that consensus has been reached and I'll initiate the move. ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 13:01, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- No opposition to "family" in the place of "line". -- ferret (talk) 13:51, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- A bit early to declare that consensus has been reached, particularly since you have voiced a specific opinion here. These things normally run for a week or so and are closed by an uninvolved editor. Dekimasuよ! 06:36, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Neutral (I oppose "(series)"), but these two and the Nintendo 3DS family page should all be consistent. I'd support moving to "Game Boy product line", "Nintendo DS product line", and "Nintendo 3DS product line". What do you all think of this suggestion? Paintspot Infez (talk) 22:18, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Paintspot: I second use of product line. Its textbook definition is "group of related products under a single brand sold by the same company" and that fits the bill over "family". ~ P*h3i (talk to me) 22:28, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
Game Boy (sub) families
[edit]Clarification about GB (sub) "families":
- "Families" are considered a set of devices with a fairly amount of common characteristics and belonging to the same console generation, rather than being distributed on a world geography.
- They are NOT considered revisions of the boards or devices as they were manufactured and distributed at the same time. That means those device status were "in production" at the same time (i.e. you could buy two different devices of the same family in the stores)
So far there are 3 different (sub) families:
- Classic GB family
- GB Color family. Although it only has one member it is considered a family in itself for consistency
- GB Advance family — Preceding unsigned comment added by AFernandezA (talk • contribs) 19:22, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- I agree with that assessment. Each represents a break in hardware compatibility. GBC games can't be played on an original Game Boy, and GBA games can't be played on a GBC. oknazevad (talk) 22:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Custom Game Boy in Image
[edit]The Image at the top of the page with different models from left to right has an inaccurate depiction of the black Play-It-Loud DMG Game Boy. The buttons and screen lens bezel are the wrong color--this is an image of a device that was repaired/customized, not a black Play-It-Loud as shipped from Nintendo.
I suggest replacing the image or changing the description to reflect this.
Mrrmv (talk) 16:40, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
- I'd just crop it out. The Play-it-Loud models have zero differences from the original other than casing colors, and don't need to be represented in the lead image anymore than the various casing colors of subsequent models. oknazevad (talk) 22:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Chart order
[edit]Shouldn't the chart in the Comparison section be organized in a much more logical earliest-to-latest left-to-right fashion? I mean, English is written left-to-right, so it would be expected to see the earliest thing first when reading. oknazevad (talk) 22:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
