This should really be about the person Bennelong that the electorate is named after rather than the electorate

Yes, this is tre. Did you know, I'm doing a school report on an Aboriginal Australian who lived before 1900, Bennelong is the only one i can find, and there is barely any information on him. I need to write about his life and his experiences, and i can't find any.

should be more information

[edit]

there shold be more information on bennelong. I've seen much more.

Unsourced

[edit]

Moving this to the talk page until someone can cite it (doubt that will happen):

In recent times 'Bennelong' has been used as a nickname to describe certain people who when they, like Bennelong in his later years have consumed too much alcohol, they disappear or wander off (or go 'Walkabout').

Sourced

[edit]

Added this back after finding a source on Urban Dictionary. Tim.Boyle 11:04, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not a very good source though. Please see Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Also, please read Wikipedia:Attribution. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 17:38, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Urban dictionary is a valid and reliable source as new entries are subjected to a review by administrators and then community moderated. Just because this form of English or 'slang' is not part of your vocabulary, does not mean it is not common place in some communities and hence notable enough for inclusion in this article. If you feel that the information is not relevent in this article, it would be more pratical for you to start a new disambiguated page containing the relevant information, rather than just reverting or deleting other users contributions. Tim.Boyle 12:59, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is my point. If you do not think the information belongs in that article, create the new one. I have noticed that you have a tendency to revert or delete information. This is vandalism WP:VAN. I am making the change once more. Please do not vandalise my edits. If you disagree, create the new disambiguated page. Tim.Boyle 13:30, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Dictionary practically encourages making up entries, and the administrators/community do not attempt to verify the submissions. Presence there does not indicate that it's real. If it was truly "commonplace in some communities" then it would have been noticed by one of the many other, more reliable sources on Australian slang. Or at the very least, you'd expect that someone, somewhere on this wide internet of ours would have used it on a blog or something — but a quick Google search reveals that this does not exist at all outside of Urban Dictionary.
Not to mention the ridiculous claim that Aboriginals "have no cultural concept of time". --Ptcamn 10:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed as payback

[edit]

I removed the idea that Philip was speared, "most likely as payback for the kidnappings."[1]

Watkin Tench who witnessed the spearing says that it was by someone who lived up at broken bay (far away), and that Benalong was not pleased. Let's not pollute this with politically correct revisionism.

"Capture and life in the British settlement"

In the third line of this section, "conscientiously" sounds like the motive was wholly or predominantly moral - which seems improbable, although not impossible. I propose to substitute "carefully". Errantios (talk) 03:29, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
