Furling.jpg
[edit]You cannot simply steal photos and slap a Fairuse justification on them. Copyright does not work like that. I've removed it to copyvio where it will be deleted. --Tagishsimon (talk)
- From the text you entered onto the image page: "and that there are no alternatives to using it under that doctrine". There are a number of alternatives, such as asking the copyright owner for permission or taking your own photo of sails being unfurled. PUIdisputed is for cases where the copyright is disputed. In this case, the copyright is not disputed - it belongs to Tallships or their photographer. What is disputed is the licence for the image. You can argue your case on the copyvio page if you like, but I do not think that anyone will bite on your fair use argument. Sorry if I sound testy about it all. --Tagishsimon (talk)
- Find the image listing on Wikipedia:Copyright problems and explain there (e.g. on the next line, starting with ** to indent). That might get the image a stay of execution. Good luck, but without the permission of the copyright holder, I don't think the image will stay. I cannot overemphasise the importance of the rigour with a licence needs to be adduced for a wikipedia image, if wikipedia is not to get into trouble with copyright owners. Applying the fair use test suggested here [1] leads me to believe that it would fall at step 9. Images on websites are not promotional (in the sense that album covers, actor PR photos &c., obviously are.) --Tagishsimon (talk)
- Tag the image with an apprioriate tag - this should not be fair use, but a more definate one reflecting the permission given. Annotate the image page to announce to anyone who finds it later that permission has been given. Go to the Copyright problems page and delete the listing of furling, entering as a reason in the edit summary that the furling.jpg has now been licenced by permission of the copyright holder. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)
- Good job! --Tagishsimon (talk)
Sigh. What is your fair use justification for this? --Tagishsimon (talk)
- Thanks. Being the photographer is always a good reason, and I take you at your word. However its confusing that you've written on the image page that the image is (c) 2004 Guided Discoveries, without at the same time specifying that you have any stake in the copyright or in Guided Discoveries. And the release from those photographed issue has no bearing on the licence, I think. If you adduce fair use, others may well borrow it as their "fair use". However if it is your image, then you can do as you like with it, but I would advise that you add some more information to clarify the copyright issue. --Tagishsimon (talk)
Image:Alanvilliers1.jpg
[edit]From Wikipedia:Image copyright tags (my emphasis)
Fairold: For use with images from old sources where copyright may have expired but not quite old enough for this to be certain, but where use would be contended to be fair use if still subject to copyright (eg, advertising from companies that have been out of business for 50 + years).
Please explain this one, also.--Tagishsimon (talk)
- I don't know on this one. I am not keen (as you may have observed) on fair use, other than in exceptional cases. For this reason, I would not have added the image. You may have other opinions, and you're entitled to them. I guess my rule of thumb is that if I cannot find a suitable tag, then I take that as an indication that the image should perhaps not be on the encyclopedia. Finally, please do not let me put you off contributing to the wikipedia; you are very welcome here and your contributions are valued. It's merely that there are some people who wander around wikipedia doing (amongst other things) work to ensure that we respect the copyright of others. The evidence is that there is a great deal of cut and paste; and "borrowed" images by the thousand. This, sometimes, things get brusque. --Tagishsimon (talk)
Thank you for pointing this article out. I hope I have not offended anyone in the process of going through it. Falcon June 28, 2005 06:02 (UTC)
- Heh. Terrible vandalism. I wonder who might possibly have done that... Anyways, if you're into merciless editing, have a look at Vampire lifestyle. I'm trying, one day, to get that to featured. Falcon June 28, 2005 06:34 (UTC)
Re. your adding of the picture... that's understandable as it was in the lifestyling section of Vampire. I guess it wasn't exactly met very well by someone else browsing. I really can't think of anything at all that would work here, though... Falcon June 29, 2005 20:10 (UTC)
- No, no problem. Edit away. Falcon June 30, 2005 23:44 (UTC)
Sail training
[edit]Wel, generally, an excellent article. I'm too tired to go through it tonight but'll return to it. I do take may hat off to you, very well researched, well written, following all known wikipedia conventions. I expect that you'll be able to push it to featured status soon, although perhaps it is as yet too short for that, despite being quite long. I think FP critics like a bit of length.
You seem to be winning the John Milius battle. Don't let it get to you. I've put the article on my watch list. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)
- I think the Tall Ships stuff in the article is getting off topic, and should properly be in Tall ship, since it relates primarily to a discussion of Tall Ships and only secondarily to sail training. And I hacked about with the first para, for the reason that I was uncomfortable with the word "unconventional" when from the initial words, sail training must once have been very conventional, albeit presumably Nelson would not have known it by that name.
- I think, also, you may be being a bit didactic (though I've never been sure about the meaning of that word...) First and foremost, sail training is not intended to be like a vacation. or With many options out there, it can be a difficult choice . I'm not sure what advice to give to change anything, but it sails close to being a promotional piece - albeit of the very highest quality - for sail training, rather than an encyclopedia article about sail training. Meanwhile, I continue to salute your work in sail related articles, and kinda hope that your interests w.r.t. wikipedia broaden, since you are clearly something of an asset. --Tagishsimon (talk)
- Unless you define sail training, up front, as being contemporary sail training, then surely when sail was king, it was not an unconventional? That was the gist of that edit. --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit]You might want to set up an account and start uploading GFDL and PD images to [2] - they are available, as normal, to the English wikipedia if uploaded there, but they're also available to all wikipedia langages - it's a central image server; but strictly for free images, not fairuse. I imagine that, ultimately, all GFDL and PD images will be ported to that site from the English Wikipedia image-space. Oh, and only embolden a personal name once, not repeatedly - you'll see I;ve edited your Irving Johnson and Alan Villiers pages. --Tagishsimon (talk)
Image Tagging Image:Jacobsenpilot.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Jacobsenpilot.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Agnte 10:56, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Image:Pride of baltimore inner harbor-mcallen47.jpg claims that you received permission from this photographer but you have not added any statement from him or other proofs that this statement is correct. Rmhermen 01:04, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- Adding permission statements is no problem with storage capacity or bandwith. See Wikipedia:Fair use, Wikipedia:Confirmation of permission and [[Wikipedia:Copyright problems] for more on the issue. Actually I thought that the tag you used was no longer allowed - I will have to ask about that. In the meantime I have added the above to the page. Ideally we would have a free image, of course. I have a picture of that ship at dock with furled sails against a bright sky - which is very artistic but not very illustrative, which is more important to an article. Rmhermen 13:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- I asked at Wikipedia talk:Fair use and its appears that "Copyrighted but no third party use" is no longer allowed and they expect to begin removing such images. Rmhermen 22:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Location manager
[edit]i've noticed you've removed a link to the Teamsters from the article on location managers.
they are the duly elected representatives and labor organization of location managers on the west coast and as such, a useful link in the article.
i've looked over the Wikipedia:List of policies and don't see any reason why they shouldn't be mentioned.
please cite your source.
thank you.
Seasee 05:34, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- The relevant policy is Wikipedia:External links - specifically, the way I read it, external links should bring additional information on the subject. Having (briefly) browsed through the Teamster's website, they only bring information about themselves (who they are, what they bring to members...), not information about location management itself. Also, the Teamster's Union is a bit too localised for my tastes - if it was an organisation spanning all of the US (or maybe even across the Atlantic or south of the border?), it would suit the purposes of Wikipedia, which is a worldwide information source, much better. So, my view would still be that it should be removed, noble as the Teamsters surely are.
- However, rather than doing this unilaterally, I wanted to check back with you first. Let me know what you think. And I just wanted to say that I appreciate that you sent me a message about this rather than unilaterally reverting my changes! :) — QuantumEleven | (talk) 06:53, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- PS Do you know about the Teamsters article? How about we just mention them in the article that way? — QuantumEleven | (talk) 06:57, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- i may not submit very often but at least i like to communicate with those that do when they critique my pages...i know the teamsters are a bit of a strange bedfellow for location managers but considering that the majority of the working feature location professionals are based out of hollywood and consequently, associated with the teamsters, i thought it was pertinent. the motion picture division is mentioned in the main Teamsters article and that article is mentioned in the Location manager article so it is my belief that you might as well cut out the middle man and jump straight to the parent organization but i'll submit to your judgement if you feel strongly about it. [edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Irving-exy-1973.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. Image:Hmsrosephoto.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Hmsrosephoto.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Donaldp38.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Donaldp38.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Pekingship.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:Pekingship.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

Image copyright problem with Image:Alanvilliers1.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Alanvilliers1.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
The following images also have this problem:

Fair use rationale for Image:Alanvilliers2.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Alanvilliers2.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 05:29, 27 June 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Calliopejen1 (talk) 05:29, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:STI.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:STI.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Duplicate File:Skysuite.jpg
[edit]Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on File:Skysuite.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because File:Skysuite.jpg is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting File:Skysuite.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Fair use rationale for File:RalphJScott.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:RalphJScott.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 16:59, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (File:Pilot.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Pilot.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:07, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
