Enormous Popularity?
[edit]Enormous popularity? You'd expect so, but I haven't seen any real evidence of this. I think Barney and Dog are more popular than Alyx. pomegranate 15:51, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC) Please make a section to put this in, not just at the top of the page. Flash Man999 (talk) 01:43, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
I put this in its own section. 173.65.239.63 (talk) 02:39, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Relations with Gordon needs work
[edit]I am uncertain whether this section contains many other errors, but I revised it twice on June 30 2009. Many other revisions have happened recently. Can someone clean that section up and work it out? 173.65.239.63 (talk) 02:36, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
ALYX DIES controversy needs cleanup
[edit]I've looked at the entire section on "Alyx's Fate" and it seems to contain a bit too much speculation. Also, the assumption seems to be that PC Gamer made it thoroughly impossible for Alyx to die. It only said that Alyx would be in Episode 2. It never said that she wouldn't die 3/4th of the way through it. I think Valve would try to re-establish the Episode 1 connection with her anyway, before reaching a point where she is in extreme danger. Basically, I would like for this debate to remain as neutral as possible. I for one really think that Alyx will die, and moreover, that the G-man will kill her...and therefore I think it best for someone else to try to clean it up. Try to use all the info, including the Leipzig stuff and the GamesRadar article given as a reference in the Episode 2 article.--72.70.53.87 22:24, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Nude Skin
[edit]No.
- No? Why? Fair enough it has nothing to do with the character itself, but it's still a modification that exists and was widely downloaded. I won't restore the deleted paragraph (I wasn't the original author), but I don't see any problem with keeping the reference to the nude mod, provided there isn't a link to where one can download it. --Anon
- NO.
- It's ridiculous to make a paragraph about a skin. It isn't encyclopedic. There is no controversy surrounding it - just a load of pimply teens masturbating. --Tom Edwards 09:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Seconded. I'm with Tom Edwards - it's just plain unencyclopedic. --Plumbago 09:55, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

- NO.
- It looks like another editing war is to erupt on this issue. I redeleted it as unencyclopedic, yet someone insists on adding a reference to this skin.
- Its a popular piece of culture, but I say, that until Valve comments on it, it is very unencyclopedic to mention it. Also, please sign your comments. - Thekittenofterra 12:18, 31 December 2006 (UTC)]
Heres how I'm seeing this:
- Posting a link to a fan made model is completely unencyclopedic.
- Posting said link is unneeded as it adds nothing to the paragraph.
- There is no controversy, nor even an intense popularity that revolves around this model. It is just a simple model that some people download.
- If you don't have the balls to sign a comment asking us to keep it, then don't post. I never post anything I don't sign; if I feel strong enough about a topic to speak out on it, then I'd better feel strong enough about it to let people know whose speaking out.
In conclusion, I say we do not add the link as Tom Edwards put it best; its just an image that a ton of pimply teens use to mastribate to. 76.27.163.200 16:04, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Well, personally, I don't want the whole "Nude skin" to even be mentioned in the article, but if it absolutely needs to be in it, at least state some sort of official source (Like Computer Gaming World, since the writers actually interviewed the guy responsible for it.). I mean, if the whole "Nude skin" hack was mentioned in "Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball", then, as much as I dislike saying this, this also has a good enough chance to get in. Also, I'd sign the response if it weren't for the fact that the usual method (four tildes) will only expose my I.P. address. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.32.151.221 (talk) 20:29, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Dog
[edit]Where did the information about Dog's immunity/susceptibility to various weapons come from? And does this information really belong in an article about Alyx? -DynSkeet (talk) 12:02, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
- No amount of weapons fire used in-game against it does anything. Sub-machine guns, assault rifles, frag grenades etc, so it stands. The second part is by inference, and on second thought, should probably be removed. Care to do the honours, or shall I? CABAL 14:34, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
toughness
[edit]Alyx really can survive a lot of injury, considering the fact that she's wearing blue jeans and a sweatshirt. I'm not sure Freeman could survive the same amount in the HEV suit. Maybe it's futuristic armored casualwear? -DynSkeet (talk) 16:24, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
- You do realize this brings up a whole lot of other questions. How did a hulking robot that throws cars around manage to make it to Dr Kleiner's Lab without attracting attention? How are the fast zombies able to move when the muscles needed to move certain limbs are missing? Why aren't the lungs of the normal zombies falling out? Are the still-human MetroCops a direct reference to the Milgram experiment? Am I the only one that kept putting bigger and bigger objects into the miniature-teleport in Kleiner's Lab until it got busted? CABAL 16:42, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- Brings up yet another thing. If he's not wearing his helmet, how does he see his HUD? CABAL 19:47, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- I always thought that Gordon's upgraded glasses gave him ability to zoom in, target and even see sniper's beam.
- what about the zombies wearing lab coats when they are atatched to the civilians that are wereing their civis or resistance clothes? (Chardrc 23:24, 5 October 2005 (UTC))
- Hell, you seem to be having some fun, while the only one that make good questions is CABAL. And DynSkeet answered it already - it's a game, so stop asking so much questions; also, they probably won't be answered here. Also, Chardrc, they AREN'T wearing labcoats. I hate the fact that a lot of people don't seem to understand it. There ARE civilians wearing white sweaters in the game; search them in the Model Viewer or replay the game, if you like to. And c'mon, the zombies also don't even seem to be wearing "labcoats"! That's clearly a sweater! Anyway, sorry for this off-topic answer about the zombies, and stop making questions. Would you really be happier knowing all those answers?
- ok... thanks for the answer i see it now.. but i have 1 more question.. if alxy's dad is african american. why doesnt alyx apper to be african american?... please try not to get mad at questions.Chardrc 23:11, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well (I hope to God this doesn't sound racist) she IS darker than most of the Resistance citizens. And what about her mother, eh? We only ever see B&W's of Azian. God, this is getting into genetics now. bvAK-17 12:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

- The HL2:Ep1 Strategy Guide, p. 24 says that her mother is of Malaysian descent. I don't know if it matters, but there it is.
- Eh, these are interesting, but please ask Valve about this. Wikipedia is not a place for discussion, or whatever. I believe Gabe Newell returns emailed questions or something, ask him. - Thekittenofterra 12:22, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
It is just a game, but at least Barney wears body armour, they coulda at least given her that.
Info about greater vulnerability in EP1
[edit]In Episode One however, she has become somewhat more vulnerable compared to her appearance in Half-Life 2, and can easily die if the player does not keep her from being damaged continuously (as can happen when dealing with Antlion spawn areas, for example).
Are you sure about that? Have you tested in several time, or just posted something after it happened once? Every other person commenting on Alyx's vulnerability has said how hard it is to have her killed, especially in comparison to HL2. --Tom Edwards 15:02, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- She seems relatively vulnerable to me (though able to take a fair bit of punishment). I never got her killed in HL2, but I managed quite a few times in HL2:E1, especially where zombies were involved. I didn't actually realise she could die in HL2! Regarding the quote above, it does sound fair to me, though I'd much prefer if this could be confirmed somehow. Cheers, --Plumbago 15:46, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- I found exactly the opposite. She would die very quickly to Combine soldiers with shotguns in HL2, but could be surrounded by antlions in Ep1 while I sorted out the Antlion spawn areas the origianl editor talked about to no ill effect. At one point in HL2 I made a map with the sole intent of spawning enough baddies to kill her, but I don't think I ever managed it before my patience wore out. --Tom Edwards 15:53, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, I'm the one who added that paragraph about how she can die in EP1. I'm pretty sure she can, considering it's happened twice now in my playthroughs. If there are further queries as to its validity, I can provide some forum threads where lots of people note how she can die in EP1. Never saw her die in the original HL2 though, but she definately can die in EP1. It seems to be difficult for some people to reproduce however, not sure why that is. She may be more vulnerable to certain types of damage than others.

- I should also make mention that the first time she died, I was in that large parking area and was having a trouble finding all the cars to cover the antlion spawn holes. Was taking far too long to search, leaving Alyx all by herself and not assisting in her defence. No wonder she died. :)--PanicAttack 10:53, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- In Half-Life 2 it is possible for her to die when you exit the elevator to go to the command room in the depot, i remember she went to the foot of the stairs and was shot to death. 24.196.115.179 20:27, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Alyx's vulnerability becomes more apparent when the difficulty is set to Hard. On Easy or Normal, you can play through the game without even realizing she can be hurt; on Hard, there are situations where her vulnerability becomes extremely apparent. --Bhampton02 09:13, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Clarification
[edit]Her mother, Azian, can be seen in a family photograph in Black Mesa East with the face of her voice actor, Merle Dandridge. Azian was a scientist at Black Mesa, but died during the Black Mesa incident.
I dont recall it ever being stated that Azian died during Black Mesa. I was under the impression that she had died long ago. Is the above message speculation? -- Psi edit 17:34, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Apparently Gordon is supposed to remember her - Eli mentions this when you look at the photo, then he comments that Alyx and the photo are all that he has left of her or something. There's no evidence though that she was a scientist. And I didn't really see the resemblance with the VA, I'll have to look in Raising the Bar again but I never made that connection. Seek100 22:06, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I think later ill remove: Azian was a scientist at Black Mesa, but died during the Black Mesa incident. Its misleading if its untrue. == Psi edit 03:30, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- Raising the Bar states this about Eli (I love this Wiki quote code!):
“ | His wife was killed during the disaster; he escaped with only his young daughter, Alyx, and a family picture. | ” |
- Also, Dr. Breen mentions to Alyx that she "has [her] mother's eyes", implying that Breen knew Azian at Black Mesa before the resonance cascade. However, it's not mentioned that Azian is a scientist, and I don't recall ever hearing that she was. I'm pretty sure she was just lived in the facility with Alyx as Eli's family. The HL2 Prima stategy guide might have more information on her. MarphyBlack 02:16, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Alright. Thanks Marphy. -- Psi edit 13:24, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
EMP Device
[edit]I noticed there's no mention about the EMP device Alyx uses to hack the Combine equipment. Can somebody write something refering to it? Remember that it is an important device in Half-Life 2, since that device it's the way Alyx opens the paths of Nova Prospekt to you and saves her father Eli.
nationality
[edit]is there any refrence on why / how alyx's dad is african american yet she is not?
- Because she is only half-black? --Burbster 00:14, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- This is called "race", not "nationality". Besides, Alyx is quite swarthy, about the same colour as her father. Inkstersco 19:06, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Look at the picture in Black Mesa East; although it's only a black and white photo, you can see that her mother is of a different ethnic origin. Crimson Shadow 00:23, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Sound file
[edit]"In the game files an extra speech from Alyx can be found in which she elaborates, under stress, on why she can't hold herself together in front of a stalker."
Anyone know how to find this file, or possibly upload it for inclusion in the article? Crimson Shadow 07:00, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Alyx falls (No theory)
[edit]Open model viewer under Episode 1... load up Alyx...look at the sequence "ep2_train_intro_end". There are also animations of her in a buggy so she doesn't die.
- yes, but there are animations of motorbike riding in GTAIII - sometimes things are just left over from dev.
- New screenshots of Episode 2 -featuring Alyx, were released. Maybe someone should extend this article with those new pics.

remove this?
[edit]It is worth noting Alyx's appearance, importance to the story, and mannerisms in comparison to those of NPCs in the original game. All Half-Life NPCs (except bosses, Gina's hologram and the G-Man) were interchangeable within their "class" (e.g., scientist, guard, soldier) and most were completely expendable. Every guard looked, sounded, and acted exactly like every other one; there were a few different "scientist" models, but they all shared the same voice files. It is quite likely, however, that this was attributable to limitations inherent in the Quake engine used rather than a deliberate design decision. In Half-Life 2, there are several unique NPCs including Alyx, Dr. Eli Vance, Barney Calhoun and Dr. Isaac Kleiner.] it seems completely irrelevant, if there is a wikipedia page then she must be an important, unique NPC.
- "While it is possible for Gordon Freeman to fire on friendly NPCs, this causes no visible reactions (However, immediately after exiting the train in Point Insertion, the citizens will become annoyed if the player throws objects at them.) and it appears that it is impossible to injure Alyx even indirectly with the Gravity Gun. This applies for all "friendly" characters. The only exception is during parts of Highway 17 and Sandtraps where it is possible to kill friendly NPCs by placing an object in front of them and then firing a charged Gravity Gun at the object. This causes the object to slam in to the NPC at a high speed, thereby killing it indirectly. This is a switch from Half-Life, in which any and all NPCs (except the G-Man) could be easily killed by the player. It is mentioned in Half Life 2: Raising the Bar that friendly NPCs could be killed at one point, but this was removed because an NPC needed for an important trigger could be killed."
That isn't related either.
Her Age
[edit]The article says "early-to-mid 20s"? How do we know she's not, for example, 29?
Inkstersco 19:08, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Because the Cascade happened when she was only an infant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.248.128.163 (talk) 07:08, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Mother's name?
[edit]Where is her mother's name revealed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.242.129.99 (talk) 06:39, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Seconded. --Jonathan Drain 13:52, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Eli mentions it in Black Mesa East when Gordon is looking at the family photo: "You remember my wife Azian?"
Alyx's injuries
[edit]I've noticed a tendency to describe Alyx as "fatally wounded" and "mortally wounded" by the hunter in Episode 2. She is neither, as those two terms are used to describe injuries resulting in death, and Alyx does not die. To say she is gravely wounded is the accurate term, or seriously wounded if someone really wants to play letter of the law with NPOV. I played the game again recently and no one on screen makes any reference to Alyx actually being dead and brought back to life, at least not as a result of the hunter incident. She is described as being near death, that's all. 23skidoo 18:34, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- I think those terms would be correct. If it had not been for the actions of the vortigaunt immediately after the attack, she would have died. By the wiki page on mortal wounds, that qualifies. 134.84.206.71 (talk) 04:12, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Remove second to last paragraph?
[edit]It seems completely unnecessary 68.117.3.59 (talk) 03:37, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Personality and skills
[edit]This section is mottled with spoilers and speculation. How can anyone reliably conclude that Alyx holds Breen responsible for her mother's death based on a single remark, that seems intended only to infuriate Eli Vance?
Unarmed Combat.
[edit]This is directed at Mezigue. I was just wondering why you removed the part about her beating Civil Protection officers at the beginning of the game? It is clearly implied through sound that she beat the officers unconscious. This is supported by the lack of a death notice on the officers radios. Why did you remove it? It shows that even though it is not seen by the player, that she is very capable of combating several people unarmed. 68.39.248.115 (talk) 00:47, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Rescued by G-man
[edit]In Episode 2 as Alyx Vance is being healed and G-man appears to have a heart-to-heart with Gordon, he mentions how he "plucked her from Black Mesa" despite others (there is no idea who G-man is working with) saying that she is a child and no use, so G-man is the reason why Alyx didn't die in the Black Mesa indicent and there is currently no information why G-man rescued her. Eli also mentions how she was rescued for G-man's selfish reasons. I think someone should mention it in the article, as it seems to be an important part for Alyx's survival. The quote can be found in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk8IdP-upKY Mailiaz (talk) 21:23, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
The Reception section has been not updated for years
[edit]It's also rather awkwardly written, probably needs to be rweritten too (I rewrote it a bit already). --Niemti (talk) 21:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Photo
[edit]Should we update the lead photo of Alyx? Might be better to use a photo of the Source 1 model (the one most players are familiar with) or the Source 2 model, which is higher resolution but only shown briefly at the end of Half Life: Alyx and is arguably unfinished. We can grab the images from the Valve Developer Wiki or I can make new ones if that's needed: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Alyx_Vance — Preceding unsigned comment added by 9yz (talk • contribs) 04:27, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
